The Terwillegar Community Recreation Centre, also called the Southwest Recreation Centre, was completed in early 2011 and is one of Edmonton's premier community facilities. The facility includes a salt water aquatic centre, a fitness centre and track, an arena area, 3 indoor gymnasiums, a children's wing, and four commercial spaces. The arena area contains 4 NHL-sized ice sheets and is approximately 172,000 square feet, including 20 dressing rooms, heated spectator viewing areas, and multi-purpose rooms. The project is registered for LEED Silver certification.
The building mechanical systems were designed and installed to provide energy efficiency, featuring air-to-air heat recovery for arena change rooms, desiccant humidification for the arenas, and refrigerant plant waste heat reclaim for use in roof top unit heating coils, domestic water pre-heat, desiccant dehumidification wheel regeneration, and arena spectator in-floor radiant heating.
The aquatic facility includes a 50m long 8 lane pool, a leisure and wave pool, a lazy river, a hot tub, a children's pool, and a steam room. The aquatic facility includes large anthracite / sand filters with carbon polish finish to provide lower micron particle removal than traditional pool filtration systems, as well as an electrolytic salt-chlorine system for sanitization.
